Shannon in Bloom initiative launched

7 October 2021

Today, 7th October 2021, saw the launch of the ‘Shannon in Bloom’ initiative with the community taking the lead in planting 50,000 pollinator friendly bulbs across the Shannon Municipal District stretching from Clonlara to Shannon Town.

This initiative is supported by the seven local Councillors and the Shannon MD Office. The aim of the project is to plant bulbs and wildflowers at 11 locations including Shannon Town, Newmarket on Fergus, Sixmilebridge, Westbury, Cratoloe, Shannon Banks, Clonlara, Parteen, Meelick, Ardnacrusha and Bunratty.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr John Crowe, Cathaoirleach of Shannon Municipal District, said that the initiative has been “prompted by our shared experience in difficult times and looks forward with hope for a brighter new year as these wonderful flowers bloom on our landscape”.

This community planting event will create a space for your community to highlight an area in your village or town for bulb and wildflower seed planting, allow a community to come together in a safe outdoor setting to work side by side to create the bulb beds and look forward to the spring when a riot of colour heralds the arrival of brighter days, new beginnings and a vibrant splash of colour in your community.

With pollinator friendly plants included, the ‘Shannon in Bloom’ initiative will create a new havens for bees and other pollinators and insects. It will add to the important open spaces in our communities by bringing colour and meeting biodiversity goals.
